In 2024, the Québec Survey on Performing Arts Attendance is going online!

For 20 years, the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec has been collecting and disseminating data on attendance, number of performances, and ticket sales revenues for public, paying professional performing arts shows.

The improvements made to the survey and new features are as follows:

    • User-friendly online questionnaire
    • Survey to be completed quarterly rather than bimonthly
    • New statistical indicator added on the language of performance
    • Revised artistic disciplines that reflect changes on the performing arts scene:
      • Stand-up comedy, speech arts, circus arts, musicals, and multidisciplinary shows have been added.
      • Sub-disciplines for music and theatre have also been revised.
    • Data leveraged in collaboration with the performing arts industry:
      • Information provided by show producers is used to validate the data collected by the ISQ and to reduce the burden of respondent organizations.
      • ISQ data linked with data from online ticketing systems (underway).

    Type of survey

Bimonthly survey (2004 to 2023) and quarterly survey (since 2024).
