Low-income persons living alone

In Québec, slightly more than 1 in 6 persons living alone were in a low-income situation in 2022, or about 211,400 people. The low-income rate was much higher among persons living alone (16%) than among those not living alone (4.8%) according to the Market Basket Measure in 2022.

Data and publication that provide detailed information on the low-income situation of persons living alone compared with other population groups according to various sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age, education level, immigration status, visible minority status, and disability status) for the period from 2015 to 2022. Comparisons with the other provinces and between regions are also presented.

The report includes a detailed profile of low-income persons living alone for the year 2022, as well as an analysis of:

  • Low income intensity (average gap, deep economic poverty, basket coefficient)
  • Economic situation (income and sources of income)
  • Labour market activity (labour force status, work experience, full- or part-time status, industry)
  • Housing conditions (housing tenure, core housing needs, subsidized housing)

The report also focuses on the gaps between men and women.
