The table presents the components which allow these data to be reconciled and explain their differences. Data from the greenhouse gas emissions account differ from those figuring in the National Inventory Report on greenhouse gas sources and sinks (NIR) published by Environment and Climate Change Canada in order to honour its obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The greenhouse gas emissions account covers carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from industry, governments, institutions and households. Sources of emissions considered are: combustion from fossil fuels and biomass, other uses of fossil fuels, industrial processes, agricultural soils, manure from livestock and enteric fermentation. The method complies with the United Nations&rsquo; System of Environmental-Economic accounting, which aims to link environmental information with economic information from national accounts.
