Population dynamics vary greatly from one region to another. In each region, fertility, mortality, and migration combine differently to change the size and age structure of the population. This publication provides an overview of the demographic report as of July 1, 2021 for each of Québec’s 17 administrative regions.
This report is the first to be fully included within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been affecting Québec since March 2020. We find out that some of the trends that stood out in the 2019-2020 data were amplified in 2020-2021. Population growth accelerated again in most regions, but slowed in regions where the largest urban centres are located. In the Montréal region, the population actually declined, and this drop was particularly sharp.
