Summary of responsibilities
Motor vehicle mechanics perform a variety of mechanical, electrical and electronic inspection, repair and maintenance work on vehicles, machinery and equipment powered by gasoline-, diesel- or oil-fuelled internal combustion engines, and on parts and auxiliary units of these types of equipment. More specifically, they identify the cause of malfunctions and make the necessary adjustments and repairs, perform preventive maintenance and periodic check-ups of vehicles, disassemble vehicles and machinery or their major components to remove and repair damaged or worn parts, and reassemble them.
Education requirement
Diploma of Vocational Studies (DEP) with a specialization in automobile or heavy equipment mechanics, or the equivalent recognized by the appropriate authority
Condition of employment
Hold or be in the process to obtain a trade certification, except in establishments where the mechanics services are not provided to the public or to other enterprises
