Highlights from the Québec Survey on Potatoes. Disposition of the 2024 Harvest

By Caroline Côté
Released: March 31, 2026

The Québec Survey on Potatoes was conducted by the Institut de la statistique du Québec for the 2024 harvest. The data produced from this survey provide an overview of Québec potato producers with at least 0.2 hectares in production.

Precautions when reading results

The differences between the estimates provided are statistically significant at the 5% threshold. Unless otherwise indicated, only statistically significant changes are presented.

Planted area stable

For 2024, the area of potatoes planted in Québec is estimated at 19.0 thousand hectares (kha), up from 17.1 kha in 2023.

On a regional level, the largest planted area was observed in the combined administrative regions of Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches (5.6 kha), where it was up 31.8% (+1.36 kha) from 2023. The next largest planted area was in Montréal, Laval and Lanaudière (3.8 kha). Together, these two groups of regions accounted for 50% of planted areas in Québec.

In contrast, the combined region of Outaouais, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Nord-du-Québec and Laurentides recorded a significant drop from 2023 (-25.0%; -0.3 kha).

Harvested area up

The area of potatoes harvested stood at 18.8 kha, up 13.0% (+2.1 kha) from 2023 (16.7 kha). The combined regions of Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches posted the strongest growth in 2024, with a 31.8% increase (+1.4 kha).

Production and yield up

Potato production totalled 666.3 thousand metric tonnes (kt) in 2024, up 26.0% (+137.6 kt) from 2023, exceeding the high observed in 2022 (647.6 kt).

The graph below shows that production has been constantly increasing in the province, with the exception of 2023.

The largest percentage increase was observed in Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec, at 62.4% (+33.4 kt). Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches followed closely with a 43.5% increase (+63. kt). Conversely, the group comprising the regions of Outaouais, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Nord-du-Québec and Laurentides was the only one to register a decline in production, which was down 16.6% (-5.2 kt).

The potato yield was 35.34 tonnes per hectare (t/ha) in the province in 2024, up 11.1% (+3.5 t/ha) from 2023. The graph below shows that most regions had yields comparable with 2022 after a difficult year in 2023 for several of them. In 2024 , the potato yield bounced back in the combined regions of Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec with a 28.5% increase (+7.48 t/ha), following a 24.0% drop in the previous year. We see that all regions had good yields, which boosted results for the province overall.

Volume and value of sales increased

The volume of sales has recently fluctuated. After rising to 606.4 kt in 2022 then decreasing to 495.1 kt (-18.4%; -111.4 kt) in 2023, the volume of sales was up 18.6% (+92.3 kt) in 2024 from the previous year. These variations mirror those in potato production, which decreased in 2022 after having grown every year since 2018.

Two groups of regions stood out in terms of volume and production. Production rose in the group comprised of Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec, leading to a 78.9% (+37.1 kt) increase in the volume of outside-sector sales, while this growth reached 43.3% (+60.0 kt) in Capitale-Nationale  and Chaudière-Appalaches. In contrast, the combined regions of Outaouais, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Nord-du-Québec and Laurentides felt the consequences of lower production with a 19.4% (-5.4 kt) decline in sales volume.

As for potato sales, they stood at $268.3 million in 2024 in Québec, up 21.6% (+$47.7 million) from 2023 ($220.5 million). The groups composed of Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches and of Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec accounted for 74.8% (+$35.7 million) of this increase.

The group comprising Outaouais, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Nord-du-Québec and Laurentides is the only one that posted a sharp drop in the value of sales (-19.7%; -$2.2 million), which is consistent with the other declines posted in these regions.
However, since the increase in dollar sales in the other regions was enough to offset this decrease, the province as a whole saw growth.

Average price stable in Québec

While production volume was up 26.9%, dollar sales increased by only 21.6%, which points to a stability in prices at the provincial level.

The weighted average price of potatoes sold is estimated at $429.40/t in 2024, down from $443.80/t in 2023 (-3.25%; -$14.40/t). Prices were similar to those in the previous year in almost all regions.

The only notable exception is the combined regions of Estrie and Montérégie, where the average price was up 9.4% to $491.18/t.
