Québec Survey on the Quality of Educational Childcare (Grandir en qualité) 2003 and 2014

    Type of survey

    Cross-sectional survey.

    Targeted population

    Children attending educational childcare regulated by the Ministère de la Famille du Québec opened for at least 16 months before the beginning of the survey. Children residing in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and in the Nord-du-Québec health region, those attending Aboriginal childcare, as well as those attending specialized services for handicapped children and childcare establishments that offer only half-day services (similar to nursery school) are excluded.

    Sample

    2003

    793 groups of children in the following 5 types of childcare: childcare centres (CPEs) – under 18 months; childcare centres (CPEs) – over 18 months; daycare centres – under 18 months; daycare centres – over 18 months; home childcare.

    2014

    560 groups of children in the following 4 types of childcare: childcare centres (CPEs) – under 18 months; childcare centres (CPEs) – over 18 months; non-subsidized daycare centres – under 18 months; non-subsidized daycare centres – over 18 months.

    Themes

    Overall quality, quality according to 4 dimensions (structuring of the premises, structuring and variation in the types of activities, educator’s interactions with children and parents) and according to 6 basic activities (arrival, meals, personal care, outside play, transitions and end of day); characteristics of the educational childcare environment and factors associated with educational quality.
