The languages spoken in Québec in 2025. Highlights

The Study on the Languages Spoken in Québec aims to produce reliable, objective statistics on the languages used by Quebecers in various contexts of life. The results of the 2025 edition of the study were produced by the ISQ from data provided by 44,634 individuals who completed a questionnaire between November 12, 2024 and July 20, 2025.

Language used most frequently in formal work situations

In 2025, about 73% of Québec workers most frequently used French in formal work situations. Approximately 12% of workers most frequently used English, and 13% most frequently used both French and English. The rest of workers (2%) most frequently used another language or combination of languages.

Language used most frequently to speak to store staff

In the stores they usually visit, when speaking to staff, about 83% of Québec consumers aged 15 and over most frequently used French in 2025; 8% used as frequently French and English, and 7% most frequently used English. On the Island of Montréal, 61% of consumers aged 15 and over most frequently used French to speak to store staff; 17% used as frequently French and English; and 17% most frequently used English.

Around half of Internet users aged 15 and over most frequently browse the Internet in French; about one quarter most frequently in English; and nearly 1 in 5 most frequently in both languages. The percentages are similar for people aged 15 and over who make online purchases.

About 58% of people who watch or listen to news or current affairs programs on TV, the radio or the Internet most frequently do so in French.

About 46% of people aged 15 and over who watch movies or TV series on streaming services watch them most frequently in French, 35% most frequently in English, and 12% most frequently in both French and English.

About 60% of readers aged 15 and over most frequently read books, periodicals or other publications in French, while 17% read most frequently in English and 15% read most frequently in French and in English.
