Research and development in Québec businesses

    In 2021, business enterprise research and development (BERD) spending totalled $6,569 million, an increase of 7.4% from 2020 and 15.1% from 2019. The service sector’s share of R&D spending remained significant (57.6%), while that of the manufacturing sector continued to decline (39.0%). R&D spending by the information and communication technology sector accounted for 32.1% of BERD in 2021, up from 30.9% in 2020.

    The analysis covers intramural research and development spending by the business enterprise sector in Québec as well as personnel engaged in R&D activities based on data from Statistics Canada’s Annual Survey of Research and Development in Canadian Industry (RDCI).
