This bulletin reports the main results on innovation for Québec, based on Statistics Canada’s Survey of Innovation and Business Strategy 2022. Several results for 2020–2022—the pandemic period—are compared to those for 2017–2019.
These results show that the innovation rate decreased during the pandemic period.
In Québec, in 2020–2022, 70.0% of businesses innovated, compared to 77.9% in 2017–2019. The rate of product innovation (45.2% vs. 51.3%) and business process innovation (60.5% vs. 71.0%) both declined.
This bulletin also provides results on business strategies and the participation of businesses in global value chains.
Federal-provincial partnership to improve the quality of estimates
As part of the Survey of Innovation and Business Strategy 2022, the Institut de la statistique du Québec was joined by Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions; Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada; the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie du Québec; the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale du Québec; the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail; and the Conseil de l’innovation du Québec in funding an additional sample of businesses headquartered in Québec in order to improve the quality of estimates.
