Factors associated with voter turnout among young adults born in Québec in the late 1990s

    This publication examines the factors associated with voter turnout among young adults born in Québec in the late 1990s. During the 2019 data collection for the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD), the respondents, then aged 21, were asked about their participation in the fall 2018 provincial election. This information was linked with factors measured during childhood, adolescence and early adulthood, including civic engagement (e.g., volunteering, signing petitions, etc.).

    The analyses revealed that more than 2 in 3 young adults (69%) born in Québec in 1997-1998 reported having voted in the 2018 provincial election.

    There is a link between young adults voting and:

    • maternal education;
    • young adults’ education, employment, area of residence and level of trust; and
    • young adults’ civic engagement.
