Québec, September 20, 2023. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 8.1% in July 2023 from the previous month. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase were aircraft (+106.3%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (+283.8%), iron ores and concentrates (+24.6%), as well as lubricants and other petroleum refinery products, whose exports in June were very low.
The products whose exports decreased in July include heavy fuel oils (-68.1%), copper ores and concentrates (-99.6%), other metal ores and concentrates not elsewhere classified (-30.6%), and nickel ores and concentrates (-99.5%).
Exports in the first seven months of 2023 were up 2.6% from the same period in 2022.
Québec’s international merchandise imports down in July 2023
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 7.0% in July from June 2023.
The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports were nickel ores and concentrates (-100.0%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (-34.0%), copper ores and concentrates (-95.0%), and diesel and biodiesel fuels (-93.8%).
In contrast, imports of certain products were up in July. This was the case for motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (+40.2%), aviation fuel (+62.3%), bauxite and aluminum oxide (+39.3%), and conventional crude oil (+7.9%).
Imports in the first seven months of 2023 were down 1.2% from the same months of 2022.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on September 6, 2023, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars increased by 0.7% in July 2023 from the previous month. Canada’s merchandise imports declined by 4.0%.
For the first seven months of 2023, Canada’s merchandise exports rose by 6.6% compared with the same months of 2022, while imports decreased by 0.7%.
