Québec, January 9, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 6.7% in October 2023 from the previous month. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase were aircraft (+41.4%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals, and their alloys (+55.5%), oilseeds (except canola) (+354.0%), and diesel and biodiesel fuels (+137.2%).
The products whose exports decreased in October include other metal ores and concentrates not elsewhere classified (-62.9%), chemical products not elsewhere classified (-44.3%), lubricants and other petroleum refinery products (-96.5%), and nickel ores and concentrates (-99.4%).
Exports in the first ten months of 2023 were up 1.9% compared with the same months of 2022.
Québec’s international merchandise imports down in October 2023
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 1.6% in October from September 2023.
The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports were basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (-49.2%), light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles, without electric motor (-7.7%), passenger cars with electric motor and hybrid engine (-46.7%), and medium and heavy-duty trucks (-22.7%).
In contrast, imports of certain products were up in October. This was the case for conventional crude oil (+60.3%), diesel and biodiesel fuels (+377.8%), pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+8.8%), and aviation fuel (+41.6%).
Imports in the first ten months of 2023 were down 2.2% compared with the same months of 2022.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on December 6, 2023, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars were down 0.3% in October 2023 from the previous month. Canada’s merchandise imports decreased by 3.2%.
For the first ten months of 2023, Canada’s merchandise exports were up 5.7% compared with the same months of 2022, while imports decreased by 1.6%.
