January 23, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 0.9% in November 2023 from the previous month. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase are commercial and service industry machinery and equipment (+71.1%), oilseeds (except canola) (+48.4%), other metal ores and concentrates, not elsewhere classified (+162.4%), and aircraft engines (+14.8%).
The products whose exports decreased in November include aircraft (-36.1%), basic organic chemicals, not elsewhere classified (-35.3%), unwrought copper and copper alloys (-19.7%), and other transportation equipment (-20.2%).
Exports in the first eleven months of 2023 were up 2.3% compared with the same months of 2022.
Québec’s international merchandise imports down in November 2023
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 0.1% in November from October 2023.
The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports are conventional crude oil (-27.6%), aircraft engines (-30.6%), sugar and sugar mill by-products (-38.9%), as well as other electrical equipment and components (-37.6%).
In contrast, imports of certain products were up in November. This was the case for communication and electric wire and cable (+191.5%), nickel ores and concentrates (+224.7%), lead and zinc ores and concentrates (+76.4%), and light trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles with electric motor and hybrid engine (+14.0%).
Imports in the first eleven months of 2023 were down 2.1% compared with the same months of 2022.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on January 9, 2024, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars remained relatively stable (0.0%) in November 2023 from the previous month. Meanwhile, imports were up 1.7%.
For the first eleven months of 2023, Canada’s merchandise exports were up 5.7% compared with the same months of 2022, while imports decreased by 1.3%.
