Québec, May 18, 2022. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 2.9% from February 2022. This was revealed in an analysis of Québec’s most recent international merchandise trade data released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase were heavy fuel oils (+67.4%), iron ores and concentrates (+9.6%), as well as copper and nickel ores and concentrates, whose exports were relatively low in February.
The products whose exports decreased in March 2022 include aircraft (-19.7%), newsprint (-32.5%), waste and scrap of iron and steel (-42.7%), and other transportation equipment (-48.5%).
Exports in the first three months of 2022 were down 2.1% from the first three months of 2021.
Québec’s international merchandise imports up in March 2022
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 5.0% in March 2022 from the previous month.
The products that contributed the most to the increase in imports in March 2022 were motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (+117.9%), light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (+21.4%), copper ores and concentrates, whose imports in March were relatively low, and bauxite and aluminum oxide (+79.2%).
On the other hand, imports were down for certain products, including unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (-97.4%), basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (-36.1%), aircraft engines (-78.2%), as well as unwrought iron, steel and ferro-alloys (-74.6%).
Imports in the first three months of 2022 were down 5.5% from the first three months of 2021.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on May 4, 2022, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars increased by 3.6% in March 2022 from the previous month. Meanwhile, imports were up 6.3%.
For the first three months of 2022, Canada’s merchandise exports declined by 3.9%, while imports increased by 1.9% compared with the first three months of 2021.
