Québec, February 25, 2022. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, in constant dollars, were up 3.0% in 2021 from 2020. The two products that contributed the most to this growth were aircraft (+14.8%) and heavy fuel oils (+146.2%). This was revealed in an analysis of Québec’s most recent international merchandise trade data released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
On a monthly, seasonally-adjusted basis, exports in December were down 7.6% from November.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly decline were unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (-31.5%), oilseeds (except canola) (-65.8%), iron ores and concentrates (-15.6%), and commercial and service industry machinery and equipment (-49.0%).
The products whose exports increased in December include diesel and biodiesel fuels (+24.2%), wood pulp (+24.6%), other metal ores and concentrates not elsewhere classified (+72.7%), as well as waste and scrap of iron and steel (+57.0%).
Québec’s international merchandise imports up 10.8% in 2021
Québec’s international merchandise imports, in constant dollars, were up 10.8% in 2021 from 2020. The two products that contributed the most to this growth were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (+30.2%) and pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+25.4%).
On a monthly, seasonally-adjusted basis, imports in December were down 0.2% from November.
The products that contributed the most to the drop in imports in December were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (-7.3%), aircraft (-95.9%), and pharmaceutical and medicinal products (-10.6%).
However, imports increased for certain products, including conventional crude oil (+24.1%), unwrought iron, steel and ferro-alloys (+369.1%), motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (+27.2%), and other electrical equipment and components (+92.6%).
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on February 8, 2022, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars decreased by 2.5% in December from November 2021, while imports rose by 2.7%.
Compared with 2020, Canada’s merchandise exports and imports in 2021 were up by 1.1% and 9.0%, respectively.
