Québec, August 22, 2023 – International merchandise exports from Québec, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, fell by 1.5% in June 2023 from the previous month. These are the findings of an analysis of the latest data on Québec’s international merchandise trade, released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed most to this month-over-month decline were iron ores and concentrates (–30.7%), primary forms and semi-fabricated products of gold, silver, platinum-group metals and their alloys (–76.6%), light fuel oil (–98.0%), and distilled alcoholic beverages (–72.6%).
Among the products whose exports rose in June were heavy fuel oil (+68.2%), other metal ores and concentrates not elsewhere classified (+730.1%), and copper and nickel ores and concentrates, whose exports in May were nil.
Exports for the first six months of 2023 were up 2.3% compared to the same period in 2022.
Québec’s international imports down in June 2023
International merchandise exports from Québec, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, fell by 0.2% in June from the previous month.
The products that contributed most to the decline in imports were gold, silver, unwrought platinum group metals and their alloys (–47.7%), light trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (–5.3%), lubricants and other refinery petroleum products (–52.8%), as well as lead and zinc ores and concentrates (–100.0%).
However, imports of certain products did rise in June. This is particularly the case for aircraft and copper ores and concentrates, whose imports in May were very low, but also for nickel ores and concentrates (+377.3%) and women’s clothing (+40.5%).
Imports for the first six months of 2023 fell by 1.0% compared with the same period in 2022.
Data for Canada
According to information published by Statistics Canada on August 8, 2023, Canadian merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, fell by 4.1% in June 2023 from the previous month. Imports were down 0.4%.
For the first six months of 2023, Canada’s merchandise exports rose by 7.4% over the same period in 2022, while imports fell by 0.5%.
