Québec, August 20, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, increased by 7.7% in June following two consecutive declines (-2.2% in May and -5.0% in April). This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase are aircraft (+66.0%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (+239.7%), unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (+9.7%), and iron ores and concentrates (+21.4%).
The products whose exports decreased in June include commercial and service industry machinery and equipment (-31.2%), basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (-28.4%), diesel and biodiesel fuels (-45.3%), and wood pulp (-21.8%).
Exports in the first six months of 2024 were up 3.0% compared with the same months of 2023.
Québec’s international merchandise imports down in June 2024
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 0.9% in June 2024 from May. This drop comes after increases in May (+3.0%) and April (+3.2%).
The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports were basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (-76.3%), aircraft parts and other aerospace equipment (-18.5%), lead and zinc ores and concentrates (-99.9%), and aircraft engines (-48.3%).
In contrast, imports of certain products were up in June. This was the case for conventional crude oil (+74.4%), aircraft (+81.9%), light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles, without electric motor (+10.8%), as well as aviation fuel, whose imports were negligible in May.
Imports in the first six months of 2024 were up 1.3% compared with the same months of 2023.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on August 6, 2024, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars increased by 3.1% in June 2024 from the previous month. Imports also grew compared to May, but at a slower pace (+1.2%) than exports.
In the first six months of 2024, Canada’s merchandise exports rose by 0.2% while its imports declined by 0.3% compared with the same period in 2023.
