    Québec’s international merchandise exports up in May 2022

    Québec, July 21, 2022. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 10.2% from April 2022. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent of Québec’s international merchandise trade data released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

    The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase were aircraft (+272.7%), unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (+43.8%), pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+30.6%), and unwrought copper and copper alloys (+53.1%).

    The products whose exports decreased in May include heavy fuel oils (-76.4%), basic and semi-finished products of gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (-84.5%), aircraft parts and other aerospace equipment (-14.9%), as well as diesel and biodiesel fuels (-19.5%).

    Exports in the first five months of 2022 were up 0.8% compared with the same months of 2021.

    Québec’s international merchandise imports down in May 2022

    Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, fell 3.5% in May 2022 compared with the previous month.

    The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports were motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (-30.5%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (-37.8%), aviation fuel, whose imports were relatively low in May, as well as lead and zinc ores and concentrates (-76.2%).

    However, imports of certain products were up. This was the case for passenger cars and chassis (+28.1%), lubricants and other petroleum refinery products (+158.5%), other industry-specific manufacturing machinery (+50.2%), and parts of machine tools, hand tools, water treatment equipment and industry-specific manufacturing machinery and equipment (+53.4%).

    Imports in the first five months of 2022 were down 2.3% compared with the same months of 2021.

    The situation in Canada

    According to data published by Statistics Canada on July 7, 2022, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars increased by 2.3% in May 2022 from the previous month. Canada’s merchandise imports declined by 1.5%.

    For the first five months of 2022, Canada’s merchandise exports and imports were up by 0.1% and 4.9%, respectively, compared with the same months of 2021.
