Québec, May 16, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 1.1% in March 2024 from the previous month. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase were aircraft (+10.4%), unwrought copper and copper alloys (+54.0%), iron ores and concentrates (+17.9%), and diesel and biodiesel fuels (+64.7%).
The products whose exports decreased in March include unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (-17.9%), light fuel oils (-70.6%), heavy fuel oils (-58.4%), as well as hot-rolled iron or steel products (-22.4%).
Exports in the first three months of 2024 were 2.8% higher than in the same months of 2023.
Québec’s international merchandise imports down in March 2024
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 2.2% in March 2024 from February.
The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports were aircraft parts and other aerospace equipment (-15.4%), waste and scrap of non-ferrous metals (-69.5%), bauxite and aluminum oxide (-43.1%), and copper ores and concentrates (-100.0%).
In contrast, imports of certain products were up in March. This was the case for conventional crude oil (+54.0%), diesel and biodiesel fuels, whose imports were very low in February, hot-rolled iron or steel products (+128.8%), and light trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles with electric motor and hybrid engine (+17.0%).
Imports in the first three months of 2024 were up 2.0% compared with the same months of 2023.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on May 2, 2024, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars decreased by 3.8% in March 2024 from the previous month. Canada’s merchandise imports declined by 1.3%.
For the first three months of 2024, Canada’s merchandise exports were up 0.4% compared with the same months of 2023, while imports decreased by 0.3%.
