Québec, March 22, 2022. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 8.3% in January 2022 from December 2021. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent of Québec’s international merchandise trade data released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly decrease were aircraft
(-80.3%), iron ores and concentrates (-13.3%), heavy fuel oils (-48.7%), and perfumes and toiletries (-59.8%).
The products whose exports increased in January 2022 include unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (+16.7%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals, and their alloys (+105.3%), aircraft engines (+25.6%), and unwrought copper and copper alloys (+77.1%).
Exports in January 2022 were 8.1% lower than in January 2021.
Québec’s international merchandise imports down in January 2022
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 12.9% in January 2022 from December 2021.
The products that contributed the most to the decline in imports in January 2022 were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (-46.0%), motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (-51.6%), aviation fuel (-88.5%), and conventional crude oil (+23.3%).
On the other hand, imports of certain products increased, including pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+27.1%) and basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (+189.9%). The products whose imports increased also include copper ores and concentrates, as well as diesel and biodiesel fuels, whose imports were negligible in December 2021.
Imports in January 2022 were 7.0% lower than in January 2021.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on March 8, 2022, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars decreased by 2.6% in January 2022 from December 2021, while imports declined by 8.3%.
Compared with January 2021, Canada’s merchandise exports and imports were down by 7.0% and 2.0%, respectively.
