Québec, June 20, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 5.1% in April 2024 from the previous month. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly decline were commercial and service industry machinery and equipment (-53.9%), aircraft engines (-17.4%), waste and scrap of iron and steel (-77.1%), and unwrought copper and copper alloys (-36.6%).
The products whose exports increased in April include aircraft (+19.3%), other metal ores and concentrates not elsewhere classified (+159.9%), waste and scrap of non-ferrous metals (+72.8%), and aircraft parts and other aerospace equipment (+9.0%).
Exports in the first four months of 2024 were up 2.4% compared with the same months of 2023.
Québec’s international merchandise imports up in April 2024
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 2.0% in April 2024 from March.
The products that contributed the most to this increase in imports were pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+34.5%), basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (+147.7%), lubricants and other petroleum refinery products (+133.2%), and bauxite and aluminum oxide (+51.2%).
In contrast, imports of certain products were down in April. That was the case for diesel and biodiesel fuels (-100.0%), tires (-37.0%), motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (-22.4%), and hot-rolled iron or steel products (-36.7%).
Imports in the first four months of 2024 were up 2.4% compared with the same months of 2023.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on June 6, 2024, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars increased by 0.8% in April 2024 from the previous month. Canada’s merchandise imports declined by 1.2%.
For the first four months of 2024, Canada’s merchandise exports were down 0.7% compared with the same months of 2023, while imports increased by 0.1%.
