Proportion of smokers declines as vaping rises

Québec, May 30, 2024. – The Institut de la statistique du Québec released today the first results of the Québec Survey on Tobacco and Vaping Products 2023 conducted among nearly 12,000 people aged 15 and over.

These results show that about 1 in 10 people smoked cigarettes in the 30 days before the survey and that more men than women smoked cigarettes in 2023 (12% vs. 10%).

In addition, 7% of Quebecers vaped over the same period. There was no significant gender difference for vaping.

Proportion of cigarette smokers on a downward trend

Between 2020 and 2023, the proportion of cigarette smokers decreased from 12% to 11%, showing a downward trend.

Cigarette smoking is less common among youth aged 15 to 17 (3.2%) than in older age groups (between 8% and 13%).

More than 1 in 5 young adults aged 18 to 24 vape

Vaping is more popular among younger than older people. In Québec, about 22% of young adults aged 18 to 24 vaped in 2023, compared to 4.3% of people aged 35 to 64 and 1.1% of those aged 65 and over.

Overall, the proportion of Quebecers who vaped in the 30 days before the survey increased from 4.1% in 2020 to 7% in 2023.
