Québec, August 29, 2024. – The production volume of the Québec audiovisual industry reached a new all-time high of $3.21 billion in 2022–2023, up 14.6% (+$409 million) from the previous year. This growth was largely due to an increase in the volume of foreign productions and production services, which accounted for 52% of total production volume. This was revealed in the 2024 edition of Profil de l’industrie audiovisuelle au Québec published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Large increase in foreign production and production services
In 2022–2023, the volume of foreign production and production services (e.g., animation and special effects) rose to $1.65 billion, up $223 million (+15.6%) from 2021–2022. For the past few years (except 2020–2021), this category has been the largest component of Québec film and television production.
Québec independent television production reached a peak
In 2022–2023, Québec independent television production volume rose by 10% to $933 million—a 10-year high—due to an increase in the production volume of French-language drama, variety, and magazine-type TV programs. These three genres accounted for 72% of television production volume ($673 million).
Strong increase in Québec film production
The volume of Québec film production was up sharply from 2021–2022 (+85%) to $270 million, an increase that was due to a larger number of productions (94 vs. 78 in 2021–2022). Of that amount, $176 million (65%) came from the production of French-language fiction feature films, which is higher than the average of the past 10 years.
Drop in productions for online distribution
The volume of productions intended for online distribution dropped to $28 million in 2022–2023 from $67 million in 2021–2022, a 59% decline. The lower number of productions (-17%) appears to be the main factor behind this decline.
Profile of the audiovisual industry in Québec in 2022–2023
The 2024 edition of the Profil de l’industrie audiovisuelle au Québec covers the 2022–2023 fiscal year, which ended on March 31, 2023. That is why the data do not reflect the effects of the writers’ strike in the United States that started in May 2023 followed by the actors’ strike in July 2023, both of which had major impacts on audiovisual production activity in Québec in 2023–2024. The effects of these strikes will be measured in next year’s publication.
