Notice of release
Montréal, January 7, 2021. – The Institut de la statistique du Québec is releasing today an analysis of the recovery of the payroll jobs lost in the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic and of the total weekly payroll in Québec industries. The combination of these two indicators provides a more complete picture of the pandemic’s effects on the Québec labour market.
These findings are based on data from Statistics Canada’s Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours (SEPH).
Highlights
The situation in August 2020 compared with August 2019:
- All industries: employment recovery rate at 93.5% of the August 2019 level, but payroll recovery rate at 101.4%.
- Employment recovery rate around 100% in certain industries: finance and insurance; professional, scientific and technical services; health care and social assistance; public administration.
- Arts, entertainment and recreation and accommodation and food services: employment recovery rate of only about 73% in these two industries.
- Total payroll of more than 110% in health care and social assistance, but of only 75% in accommodation and food services.
The employment and total payroll recovery rates in Québec are among the highest in Canada.
