    A new look at Quebec businesses’ intellectual property awareness and use

    Quebec City, July 12, 2022 – Today, for the first time, the Institut de la statistique du Québec released a report analyzing Quebec businesses’ awareness and use of intellectual property (IP) between 2017 and 2019. The report shows that trademarks are the type of IP most widely owned by Quebec businesses.

    Highlights

    • In 2019, nearly 55% of Quebec businesses said they were familiar with intellectual property.
    • In 2019, 42.5% of businesses were familiar with trademarks, 32.5% with patents, 32.0% with copyrights and 31.9% with non-disclosure agreements.
    • Just over six out of ten (67.4%) of businesses sought information about IP from external law firms or lawyers. The Canadian Intellectual Property Office was the second most used source of information (37.8%).
    • At least one out of two businesses considered IP to be important in brand protection (56.2%), maintaining competitiveness (52.0%) and marketing and promotion (52.2%).
    • In 2019, 24.8% of Quebec businesses owned an IP right, versus 17.1% in Ontario, 11.2% in the Atlantic region and 16.4% in the rest of Canada.
    • In 2019, more Quebec businesses owned a trademark (in Canada or abroad) than any other province or territory.
