Québec’s international merchandise exports down 4.3% in June 2021

Québec, August 19, 2021. – Québec’s seasonally adjusted international merchandise exports in constant dollars were down 4.3% in June 2021. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent international merchandise trade data for Québec released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

The main products whose exports decreased in June were aircraft (-53.0%), aircraft engines (-28.5%), iron ores and concentrates (-22.5%), and oilseeds (except canola) (-68.6%).

However, exports of other products posted significant increases, including heavy fuel oils, copper ores and concentrates (exports of these two classes of products were negligible in the previous month), commercial and service industry machinery and equipment (+89.0%), and unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (+7.8%).

For the first six months of 2021, Québec’s international merchandise exports were up 3.7% from the same months in 2020.

Québec’s international merchandise imports down 3.2% in June 2021

Québec’s seasonally adjusted international merchandise imports in constant dollars were down 3.2% in June from May 2021.  

The products that contributed the most to the decline in imports in June were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (-10.3%), aircraft parts and other aerospace equipment (-21.2%), and medical, dental and personal safety supplies (-49.0%).

On the other hand, imports in the aircraft sector (imports in May were negligible) as well as imports of motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (+224.7%), conventional crude oil (+17.3%) and copper ores and concentrates (+272.8%) increased.

For the first six months of 2021, Québec’s international merchandise imports grew 16.0% compared with the same months in 2020.

The situation in Canada

According to data published by Statistics Canada on August 5, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars increased by 6.3% in June from May 2021, while imports decreased by 2.3%.
