Québec, November 19, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 0.5% in September 2024 from the previous month (-5.9% in August). This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent of Québec’s international merchandise trade data released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase are aircraft (+26.2%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (+272.2%), unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (+13.3%), and waste and scrap of iron and steel (+153.1%).
The products whose exports decreased in September include heavy fuel oils (-91.5%), unwrought copper and copper alloys (-65.2%), pharmaceutical and medicinal products (-30.9%), as well as nickel ores and concentrates, which had no exports in September.
Exports in the first nine months of 2024 were up 3.7% compared with the same months of 2023.
Québec’s international merchandise imports down 8.0% in September 2024
Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 8.0% in September 2024 from August (+1.2% in August).
The products that contributed the most to this decline in imports are aircraft parts and other aerospace equipment (-34.4%), batteries and battery chargers (-61.7%), pharmaceutical and medicinal products (-13.4%), and light trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles with electric motor and hybrid engine (-21.0%).
In contrast, imports of certain products were up in September. This was the case for basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (+221.8%), motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (+50.0%), passenger cars and chassis, without electric motor (+39.1%), and coke and other coke oven products (+194.6%).
Imports in the first nine months of 2024 were up 0.6% from the same period in 2023.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on November 5, 2024, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars rose by 2.7% in September 2024 from the previous month, while imports decreased by 1.6%.
For the first nine months of 2024, Canada’s merchandise exports were up 0.3% compared with the same months of 2023, while imports were down 0.4%.
