Québec’s international merchandise exports up in July 2024

Québec, September 18, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were up 5.6% in July after increasing 8.0% in June. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec

The products that contributed the most to this monthly increase are unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals, and their alloys (+151.6%), light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles, without electric motor (+42.5%), medium and heavy-duty trucks (+67.1%), as well as basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (+46.5%).

The products whose exports decreased in July include aircraft (-6.7%), nickel ores and concentrates (-100.0%), copper ores and concentrates (-99.8%), and iron ores and concentrates (-8.1%).

Exports in the first seven months of 2024 were up 3.3% compared with the same months of 2023.

Québec’s international merchandise imports down in July 2024

Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 5.8% in July 2024 from June (+1.3% in June).

The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles, without electric motor (-22.3%), aircraft
(-37.8%), aviation fuel (-100.0%), and ships (-98.6%).

In contrast, imports of certain products were up in July. This was the case for basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (+410.1%), unwrought copper and copper alloys (+239.4%), gold, silver, and platinum group metals, and their alloys (+120.2%), and pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+6.4%).

Imports in the first seven months of 2024 were up 1.3% from the same period in 2023.

The situation in Canada

According to data published by Statistics Canada on September 4, 2024, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars decreased by 1.1% in July 2024 from the previous month. Meanwhile, imports were down 2.8%.

For the first seven months of 2024, Canada’s merchandise exports were up 0.1% compared with the same months of 2023, while imports decreased by 0.4%.
