Québec, June 10, 2025. – In 2024, Québec movie theatres welcomed 13.5 million moviegoers, down 7% from 2023 (14.6 million) and 28% from 2019, the pre-pandemic reference year.
The number of screenings was up (+3% from 2023), but it was still 11% below the pre-pandemic level (2019). This information comes from the publication La fréquentation des cinémas en 2024 released today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Screenings and new releases up
In 2024, 850,150 screenings and 637 new releases were shown in theatres in Québec, up 3% and 11%, respectively, from 2023.
Record high for Québec films
In 2024, the market share of Québec films in theatrical attendance stood at 15% in Québec (12% in 2023, 9% in 2022, and 8% in 2019). Apart from the all-time high of 19% in 2005, this is the highest result since this indicator has been measured.

Québec film Nos Belles-Soeurs ranked 7th at the 2024 box office. Two other Québec films ranked in the top 20: Le cyclone de Noël (No. 8) and 1995 (No. 9). These three feature films accounted for 43% of all attendance to Québec films shown in 2024.
With this box office performance, admissions to Québec films in 2024 were up 15% from the previous year (2 million in 2024, up from 1.8 million in 2023) and 36% from 2019 (1.5 million).
These results come from the Film Screening Survey, which is conducted every year by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
