Québec, September 16, 2021. – Québec’s seasonally adjusted international merchandise exports in constant dollars were down 0.1% in July 2021 from June. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent international merchandise trade data for Québec released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The products that contributed the most to the decline in exports in July were other transportation equipment (-74.0%), basic and semi-finished products of gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (-55.9%), and commercial and service industry machinery and equipment (-32.1%).
However, exports of other products showed significant increases, including diesel and biodiesel fuels (+246.8%), waste and scrap of iron and steel (+133.7%), aircraft (+13.2%), and unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals, and their alloys (+136.9%).
For the first seven months of 2021, Québec’s international merchandise exports were up 3.1% from the same months in 2020.
Québec’s international merchandise imports up 0.1% in July 2021
Québec’s seasonally adjusted international merchandise imports in constant dollars were up 0.1% in July from June 2021.
The products that contributed the most to the increase in imports in July were unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (+100.4%), light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (+15.3%), motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (+35.3%), and pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+17.5%).
On the other hand, imports of aircraft (-94.1%), lubricants and other petroleum refinery products (-56.9%) and basic and semi-finished products of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous metal alloys (except gold, silver, platinum group metals and aluminum) (-34.7%) posted declines.
For the first seven months of 2021, Québec’s international merchandise imports grew 14.8% compared with the same months in 2020.
The situation in Canada
According to data published by Statistics Canada on September 2, 2021, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars decreased by 4.6% in July from June 2021, while imports rose by 2.2%.
For the first seven months of 2021, compared with the same period last year, Canada’s merchandise exports increased by 4.1%, and its imports were up by 14.3%.
