Elder abuse in Québec: links to previously experienced violence

    Notice of release

Québec, November 19, 2021. – The Institut de la statistique du Québec released an analysis today that examines the links between elder abuse and violence experienced earlier in life. The results presented provide a better understanding of the trajectories of violence over the course of a lifetime and demonstrate the relevance of taking into account histories of violence in elder abuse research and intervention.

    Highlights

In 2019, of those aged 65 and over living at home and able to answer a questionnaire for themselves:

    • Nearly 6%—or 78,900 people—reported having experienced at least one type of abuse in the previous 12 months.
    • 2% had experienced at least one type of violence before the age of 18; 14.8% between the ages of 18 and 64; and 7.0% after the age of 65.

The analyses show that seniors who have experienced more different types of violence in the past are more likely to have suffered abuse in the past year than those who have experienced fewer types of violence.

In addition, those who have experienced abuse in their lifetime and have a more recent history of violence are more likely to have experienced abuse in the past year than those with a more distant history of violence.
