Québec’s international exports down in December 2023

Québec, February 23, 2024. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 4.0% in December 2023 from the previous month. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent data on Québec’s international merchandise trade released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

The products that contributed the most to this monthly decline were unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals, and their alloys (−83.0%), commercial and service industry machinery and equipment (−64.3%), nickel ores and concentrates (−100.0%), and waste and scrap of iron and steel (−51.4%).

The products whose exports increased in December include aircraft (+51.7%), unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (+10.1%), medium and heavy-duty trucks (+62.7%), and basic organic chemicals, not elsewhere classified (+84.4%).

Exports in 2023 were up 2.8% compared with 2022.

Québec’s international merchandise imports down in December 2023

Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 1.2% in December from November 2023.

The products that contributed the most to this decrease in imports were conventional crude oil (−48.6%), light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles, without electric motor (−39.4%), lead and zinc ores and concentrates (−100.0%), and communication and electric wire and cable (−62.7%).

In contrast, imports of certain products were up in December. This was the case for diesel and biodiesel fuels (+314.6%), wine and brandy (+80.2%), medium and heavy-duty trucks (+24.0%), and pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+8.5%).

Imports in 2023 fell by 2.1% compared with 2022.

Data for Canada

According to data published by Statistics Canada on February 7, 2024, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars were down 0.9% in December 2023 from the previous month. Imports, meanwhile, rose by 0.8%.

Canada’s merchandise exports were up 5.5% in 2023 compared with 2022, while imports decreased by 1.1%.
