After a decline, the audiovisual industry was up in Québec in 2024-2025

Québec, June 10, 2026. – The production volume of the Québec audiovisual industry rebounded to $2.98 billion in 2024-2025, up 5% (+$132 million) from the previous year. This is the result of an increase in the share of foreign production and production services, which now account for 56% of the overall volume of the Québec audiovisual industry (up from 54% in 2023-2024).

This was revealed in the 2026 edition of Profil de l’industrie audiovisuelle au Québec published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Foreign production up

After a decline in the previous year caused by the impacts of the writers’ (WPA) and actors’ (SAG‑AFTRA) strikes in the United States that paralyzed several sectors of the audiovisual industry in 2023, the volume of foreign production and production services rose by $151 million ($1,680 million vs. $1,529 million in 2023-2024; +10%), despite a decrease in the number of completed projects (164 productions vs. 188 in 2023-2024; -13%).

Another decline for Québec independent television production

The volume of Québec independent television production decreased for the second consecutive year. It stood at $750 million in 2024-2025, down from $818 million in 2023-2024 (-8%). This decline is due in part to a $30 million drop in the volume of French-language drama, variety, and magazine-type TV production. Together, these three genres accounted for 68% of independent television production volume and totalled $508 million, down 6% from $538 million in 2023-2024.

Québec film production bounces back up

The volume of Québec film production grew 30% to $200 million in 2024-2025, up from $154 million in 2023-2024. This growth was mainly driven by a 42% increase in the number of feature films, which rose from 60 to 85 productions.

Fiction remained strong: 38 works were produced in 2024-2025, a 19% increase from the previous year (32). Their total volume stood at $167 million, up 28% from $130 million in 2023-2024. Lastly, documentaries posted significant growth with 47 productions in 2024-2025, up from 28 in the previous year (+68%). Their volume totalled $33 million, up 38% from 2023-2024 ($24 million).

Increased volume of productions intended for online distribution

The volume of productions intended for online distribution rose 3% to $35 million in 2024-2025, despite a decline in the number of these productions (-13%). This increase was driven by higher average production costs for single-episode programs and miniseries ($2.2 million vs. $1.3 million in 2023-2024; +71%).
