Value of mineral shipments in Québec increased in 2018 and 2019

Québec, April 16, 2020. – Final data for 2018 indicate that the value of mineral shipments in Québec increased by 13.2% over 2017 to $10.73 billion. According to preliminary data, this value should reach $10.94 billion (+2.0%) in 2019.

These findings are based on the Annual Census on Mineral Production. The most recent data from this survey were published today on the website of the Institut de la statistique du Québec. The bulletin Mines en chiffres – La production minérale au Québec en 2018 is also available today. 

Value of mineral shipments increased in mining regions in 2018

In 2018, mineral shipments were up in Québec’s three main mining regions compared with 2017 and accounted for 76.3% of the total value of Québec’s mineral shipments. The value of mineral shipments reached $3.03 billion (+8.4%) for Nord-du-Québec, $2.61 billion (+41.2%) for Côte-Nord and $2.54 billion (+12.4%) for Abitibi-Témiscamingue. As for the value of mineral shipments in the Montérégie region (mainly from mineral processing) it totalled $1.32 billion, a 3.8% drop.

$2.0 billion wage bill in 2018

In 2018, the Québec mining sector provided 17,909 jobs (person-years) for a total wage bill of $2,004 million. Compared with 2017, this represents an 11.1% increase in the number of jobs and a 14.2% increase in wage bill. In 2019, preliminary data indicate that there will be 17,288 jobs with a total wage bill of $1,948 million in this sector.

In 2018, nearly 80% of jobs were concentrated in four regions: 4,331 in Nord-du-Québec (24.2%), 4,142 in Abitibi-Témiscamingue (23.1%), 2,948 in Côte-Nord (16.5%) and 2,815 in Montérégie (15.7%).
