    Strong increase in Québec’s international merchandise exports and imports in the second quarter of 2021

    Québec, September 23, 2021. – The Institut de la statistique du Québec released today its overview of Québec’s international merchandise imports and exports in current dollars, established on a customs basis, for the second quarter of 2021. The analysis looks at this trade from several angles, including the countries of origin and destination of the products.

    It shows the most exported and imported products, as well as those whose trade varied significantly in the second quarter of 2021. The geographic dimension of the analysis allows us to identify Québec’s main export markets and sources of supply.

     Highlights from the second quarter of 2021

    • Québec’s international merchandise trade (the sum of exports and imports) totalled $50.5 billion, up 34.6% from the second quarter of 2020. The province’s main trading partners were the United States (51.0%) and China (9.4%).
    • Québec’s international merchandise exports stood at $25.0 billion, up 31.4% compared with the second quarter of 2020. A large proportion of these exports continued to be destined for the U.S. market (70.8%), and a smaller proportion for the Chinese market (5.0%). Unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys were the most exported products (8.3% of total exports).

      For the first six months of the year, exports reached nearly $48.2 billion, up 17.3% from the same period in 2020.
    • Québec’s international merchandise imports reached just over $25.5 billion, up 37.9% from the level observed in the second quarter of 2020. The United States remained Québec’s leading supplier, accounting for 31.7% of imports. The second supplier was China, whose share stood at 13.6%. The most imported products were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (8.9% of total imports).

      For the first six months of the year, imports totalled $49.0 billion, up 16.1% from the same period in 2020.
