Weekly number of deaths in Québec, 2010–2020

Notice of release

Québec, May 21, 2020. –  In response to increased interest in the evolution of the number of deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Institut de la statistique du Québec is releasing today a new series of tables on the weekly number of deaths from all causes in Québec.

The period covered is from January 2010 to the week ending April 25, 2020. In addition to the total number of deaths, results are presented by sex and by three age groups. It is important to note that the most recent data have been adjusted to account for deaths that have not yet been recorded. This allows for a more timely estimate of the total number of deaths that have occurred.

The data released today are taken from the death database of the Registre des événements démographiques du Québec.

Data from 2018 to 2020 are still preliminary. The tables will be updated every two weeks if the database coverage rate permits.

These tables are intended to serve as a complement to the data on COVID-19-related deaths released by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and the Institut national de santé publique du Québec.

The Institut de la statistique du Québec produces, analyzes and disseminates official, objective and quality statistical information on various aspects of Québec society. It is responsible for conducting all statistical surveys of general interest. The relevance of its work makes it a strategic ally for decision makers and all those wishing to learn more about Québec.
