Québec’s international merchandise exports down 7.1% in November 2019

Québec, January 22, 2020 – Québec’s seasonally adjusted international merchandise exports in constant dollars fell 7.1% in November 2019, after a 3.1% increase in October. These figures on international merchandise trade were released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

The main commodities that contributed to this drop are unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys (-24.4%), heavy fuel oil (-63.3%) and aircraft (-6.0%).

In contrast, Québec exports of oilseed products except canola (+372.9%), aircraft engines (+20.7%) and basic and semi-finished products of gold, silver, and platinum group metals, and their alloys (+38.9%) posted the largest increases in November.

In the first 11 months of 2019, Québec’s international merchandise exports in constant dollars rose 0.9% compared with the same period in 2018.

Québec’s international merchandise imports up 1.4% in November 2019

Québec’s seasonally adjusted international merchandise imports, in constant dollars, increased for a second consecutive month (+1.4% in November and +0.5% in October).

The increase in imports in November was mainly due to a rise in special transactions (+283.8%), specifically foreign manufactured goods that return to Canadian markets unchanged, and to a lesser extent, to the increase in heavy fuel oils (+224.8%) and bauxite and aluminum oxide (+39.2%).

The sharpest drops in November were in Québec imports of lubricants and other petroleum refinery products (-84.6%), aircraft (-77.4%) and crude oil (-10.5%).

In the first 11 months of 2019, Québec’s international merchandise imports in constant dollars grew 1.9% compared with the same months of 2018.

The situation in Canada

According to data published by Statistics Canada on January 7, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars were down 1.7% in November 2019. Meanwhile, Canada’s merchandise imports remained stable.

In the first 11 months of 2019, Canada’s merchandise exports rose 2.2% compared with the same period in 2018, while its merchandise imports increased by 1.3%.
