Québec’s real GDP at basic prices down 0.5% in May 2025

Québec, August 26, 2025. – In May 2025, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was down 0.5% from the previous month, after a 0.2% drop in April. That was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, mai 2025, released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Goods output declined by 1.1%

Output in the goods-producing industries decreased by 1.1% in May for the second consecutive month. The May decline was largely attributable to utilities (-5.3%) and, to a lesser extent, mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction (-4.2%) and manufacturing (-0.4%).

Services output down 0.3%

Output in the service-producing industries decreased by 0.3% in May following a 0.1% increase in April. The main sectors that declined in May are public administration (-0.8%), retail trade (-0.8%), and health care and social assistance (-0.5%).

Cumulative total for the first five months of 2025: Québec’s real GDP up 1.5%

For the first five months of 2025, Québec’s real GDP was up 1.5% over the same months in 2024. The sectors that contributed the most to this increase are educational services (+5.3%), health care and social assistance (+2.8%), real estate and rental and leasing  (+2.1%), retail trade (+3.5%), finance and insurance (+3.0%), and utilities (+6.3%).

Canada’s real GDP at basic prices down 0.1% in May 2025

According to data published by Statistics Canada on July 31, 2025, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices was down by 0.1% in May for the second consecutive month. Goods-producing industries fell by 0.1% in terms of output, while service-producing industries remained essentially unchanged. For the first five months of 2025, Canada’s real GDP was up 1.7% over the same months in 2024.
