Québec’s real GDP at basic prices down 0.5% in February 2025

Québec, May 27, 2025. – In February 2025, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was down 0.5% from the previous month, following a 0.5% increase in January. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, février 2025 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Goods production down 1.5%

The output of goods industries was down 1.5% in February after growing 2.3% in January. The decline in February came from all goods-producing industry subsectors, particularly mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (-7.9%), construction (-1.6%), and manufacturing (-0.6%).

Service output decreased by 0.2%

Output in the service industries decreased by 0.2% in February after edging down 0.1% in January. The main sectors that posted declines in February were wholesale trade (-1.9%), retail trade (-0.9%), accommodation and food services (-2.0%), and transportation and warehousing (-0.9%). On the other hand, finance and insurance was up 1.0%.

Cumulative total for the first two months of 2025: Québec’s real GDP up 1.8%

For the first two months of 2025, Québec’s real GDP was 1.8% higher than in the same months of 2024. The sectors that contributed the most to this increase are educational services (+6.3%), real estate and rental and leasing (+2.9%), health care and social assistance (+3.2%), utilities (+7.4%), finance and insurance (+3.1%), and retail trade (+2.9%). In contrast, the main sector that negatively impacted real GDP was manufacturing (-1.2%).

Canada’s real GDP at basic prices down 0.2% in February 2025

According to data published by Statistics Canada on April 30, 2025, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices was down 0.2% in February after a 0.4% increase in January. Output in the goods and service industries decreased by 0.6% and 0.1%, respectively. For the first two months of 2025, Canada’s real GDP was 1.9% higher than in the same months of 2024.
