Québec, July 29, 2025. – In April 2025, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was down 0.3% from the previous month after remaining essentially unchanged in March. This was revealed in the publication Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, avril 2025 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Production of goods down 1.4%
The output of goods industries was down 1.4% in April after growing 0.2% in March. The decline in April was primarily due to manufacturing (-2.7%), mainly transportation equipment manufacturing (-6.2%) and petroleum and coal product manufacturing (-30.1%). The drop in petroleum and coal product manufacturing was partly due to the interruption of certain oil refinery operations to perform maintenance and repair work.
In contrast, the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector was up 6.4%.
Service production up 0.1%
Service-producing industries grew 0.1% in April, after remaining relatively stable in March. The main sectors that posted increases in April were finance and insurance (+0.8%) and public administration (+0.5%). On the other hand, the professional, scientific and technical services sector was down 0.5%.
Cumulative total for the first four months of 2025: Québec’s real GDP up 1.7%
For the first four months of 2025, Québec’s real GDP was 1.7% higher than in the same months of 2024. The sectors that contributed the most to this increase are educational services (+5.8%), health care and social assistance (+3.0%), real estate and rental and leasing (+2.3%), utilities (+7.9%), finance and insurance (+3.0%), and retail trade (+3.0%).


Canada’s real GDP at basic prices down 0.1% in April 2025
According to data published by Statistics Canada on June 27, 2025, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices was down 0.1% in April after a 0.2% increase in March. Output in the goods-producing industries decreased by 0.6% while that in the service-producing industries rose by 0.1%. For the first four months of 2025, Canada’s real GDP was 1.8% higher than in the same months of 2024.
