    Québec’s international trade up 20.7% in the second quarter of 2022

    The Institut de la statistique du Québec released today an overview of Québec’s international merchandise imports and exports in current dollars, established on a customs basis, for the second quarter of 2022. 

    Trade deficit in the second quarter of 2022

    Québec’s international merchandise trade (the sum of exports and imports) stood at $61.5 billion, up 20.7% from the second quarter of 2021.

    • The province continued to trade mainly with the United States (52.7%), and to a lesser extent, with China (7.9%).
    • There was a trade deficit of $2.1 billion, compared with a deficit of $813.0 million in the second quarter of 2021.

    Exports up 18.4%

    Québec’s international merchandise exports totalled slightly over $29.6 billion, up 18.4% from the second quarter of 2021. A large proportion of these exports continued to be destined for the U.S. market (75.0%), and a smaller proportion, for the Chinese market (2.5%).

    • Unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys were the most exported products. They accounted for 11.9% of total exports and grew 62.5% from the second quarter of 2021.

    Imports up 23.0%

    Québec’s international merchandise imports reached just over $31.8 billion, up 23.0% from the level observed in the second quarter of 2021. The United States remained Québec’s leading supplier, accounting for 32.0% of total imports. China, its second-largest supplier, commanded a 12.9% share.

    • The most imported products were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) ($2.0 billion). However, imports of these products were down 16.0% from the second quarter of 2021. They were followed closely by motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) ($1.8 billion). These imports jumped 227.3% from the second quarter of 2021.
    • At $1.1 billion, imports of pharmaceutical and medicinal products were still above the $1 billion mark and rose 12.2% from the second quarter of 2021
