    Québec’s international merchandise exports and imports up in the third quarter of 2021

    Québec, December 23, 2021. – The Institut de la statistique du Québec released today its overview of Québec’s international merchandise imports and exports in current dollars, established on a customs basis, for the third quarter of 2021. The analysis looks at this trade from several angles, including the countries of origin and destination and the products imported or exported.

    Highlights from the third quarter of 2021

    • Québec’s international merchandise trade (the sum of exports and imports) reached nearly $51.3 billion, up 13.8% from the third quarter of 2020. The province continued to trade mainly with the United States (51.6%) and China (9.1%).
    • Québec’s international merchandise exports totalled $25.1 billion, up 17.3% from the third quarter of 2020. A large proportion of these exports continued to be destined for the U.S. market (72.1%), and a smaller proportion for the Chinese market (3.7%). Unwrought aluminum and aluminum alloys were the most exported products (9.5% of total exports).

      For the first nine months of the year, exports reached nearly $73.3 billion, up 17.4% from the same period in 2020.
    • Québec’s international merchandise imports stood at $26.1 billion, up 10.6% from the level observed in the third quarter of 2020. The United States remained Québec’s leading supplier, accounting for 31.9% of total imports. The second supplier was China, whose share of imports was 14.3%. The most imported products were light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (8.2% of total imports).

      For the first nine months of the year, imports totalled $75.4 billion, up 14.5% from the same period in 2020.
