    Québec’s international merchandise exports down in August 2022

    Québec, October 20, 2022. – Québec’s international merchandise exports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 1.6% in August 2022 from the previous month. This finding comes from an analysis of the most recent of Québec’s international merchandise trade data released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

    The products that contributed the most to this monthly decline were heavy fuel oils (-43.5%), iron ores and concentrates (-18.9%), pharmaceutical and medicinal products (-20.0%), and diesel and biodiesel fuels (-24.4%).

    The products whose exports increased in August include aircraft (+40.4%), aircraft engines (+22.0%), light fuel oils (+129.7%), as well as copper ores and concentrates, whose exports were very low in July.

    Exports in the first eight months of 2022 were up 3.0% compared with the same months of 2021.

    Québec’s international merchandise imports down in August 2022

    Québec’s international merchandise imports, seasonally adjusted and in constant dollars, were down 2.9% in August from July 2022.

    The products that contributed the most to the decrease in imports were aircraft (-93.2%), unwrought gold, silver, and platinum group metals and their alloys (-98.5%), conventional crude oil (-20.4%), light-duty trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) (-6.9%), and aviation fuel (-49.0%).

    However, imports of certain products were up. That was the case for pharmaceutical and medicinal products (+51.5%), motor gasoline (including blending components and ethanol fuel) (+46.6%), lubricants and other petroleum refinery products (+87.2%), and women’s clothing (+35.8%).

    Imports in the first eight months of 2022 were up 1.0% compared with the same months of 2021.

    The situation in Canada

    According to data published by Statistics Canada on October 5, 2022, Canada’s seasonally adjusted merchandise exports in constant dollars declined by 2.4% in August 2022 from the previous month. Canada’s merchandise imports decreased by 0.9%.

    For the first eight months of 2022, Canada’s merchandise exports and imports were up by 2.0% and 7.8%, respectively, compared with the same months of 2021
