Portrait of research and development expenditures in Québec businesses in 2019

Québec, March 7, 2022. – In 2019, domestic research and development (R&D) expenditures by Québec businesses totalled $5,665 million, which corresponds to 1.23% of the province’s GDP and 26.2% of such expenditures in Canada.

Québec businesses had 50,916 workers involved in R&D activities in 2019. This means that there were 12 R&D jobs per 1000 jobs. In addition, more than one third (38.1%) of personnel engaged in business R&D activities were in the manufacturing sector, while 58.6% were in the service sector.

This is what you will learn in the bulletin La recherche et développement dans les entreprises au Québec en 2019, which presents:

  • business R&D expenditures by industry and the funding structure of these expenditures;
  • business R&D personnel by industry; and
  • a comparison of Québec data with those for certain Canadian provinces and various international groupings.

The analysis is based on the results of Statistics Canada’s Annual Survey of Research and Development in Canadian Industry (RDCI).
