Québec, October 24, 2023. – In July 2023, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices remained relatively stable (0.0%) compared with the previous month, for the second month in a row. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, juillet 2023 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Goods output declined by 0.7%
For the fifth consecutive month, the output of goods-producing industries decreased (-0.7% in July and -0.1% in June). The decline in July came mainly from the utilities sector (-4.8%). Output was also down in manufacturing (-0.4%) and construction
(-0.5%). In contrast, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting posted an increase (+2.3%).
The decrease observed in the manufacturing sector was due in part to declines in metallic product manufacturing (-5.4%) and plastics and rubber products manufacturing (-5.5%).
Service production up 0.2%
In July, output in the service industries was up 0.2% after a 0.1% increase in June. The growth in July was primarily due to the wholesale trade sector (+1.4%). Output was also up in retail trade (+0.8%) and finance and insurance (+0.5%).
Cumulative total for the first seven months of 2023: Québec’s real GDP up 0.5%
For the first seven months of 2023, Québec’s real GDP was 0.5% higher than in the same months of 2022. The sectors that contributed the most to this increase are public administration (+3.3%), accommodation and food services (+12.5%), professional, scientific and technical services (+3.3%), and transportation and warehousing (+6.1%).
Canada’s real GDP at basic prices stable in July 2023
According to data published by Statistics Canada on September 29, 2023, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices remained largely unchanged (0.0%) compared with the previous month. Goods-producing industries decreased by 0.3%, while service-producing industries grew by 0.1%.
