Québec, April 25, 2023. – In January 2023, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was little changed (0.0%) from the previous month, following a 0.3% increase in December 2022. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, janvier 2023 published today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Goods output declined by 0.4%
Output in the goods-producing industries was down 0.4% in January, after a 0.8% increase in December. Declines in manufacturing (-1.4%) and utilities (-3.1%) were behind the decrease in January, while output was up in construction (+1.7%), mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (+2.3%), and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting (+0.9%).
The decline in manufacturing was mainly due to drops in the chemical manufacturing (-6.4%) and transportation equipment manufacturing (-2.1%) subsectors. Fabricated metal product manufacturing (+3.5%) and machinery manufacturing (+3.0%) posted increases.
Service output up
In January, output in the service industries was up 0.2% after a 0.2% gain in December. Several sectors contributed to the increase in January, including information and cultural industries (+1.4%), retail trade (+0.6%), and finance and insurance (+0.6%). In contrast, wholesale trade posted a significant decline
(-2.5%).
January 2023 over January 2022: Québec’s real GDP increased by 1.5%
In January 2023, Québec’s real GDP was 1.5% higher than in January 2022. The sectors that contributed the most to the GDP increase over this period are accommodation and food services (+45.9%), transportation and warehousing (+12.9%), professional, scientific and technical services (+4.4%), and public administration (+3.4%).
Canada’s real GDP at basic prices up 0.5% in January 2023
According to data published by Statistics Canada on March 31, 2023, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices increased by 0.5% in January from the previous month. Goods-producing industries rose by 0.4%, while service-producing industries grew by 0.6%.
