    Québec’s real GDP at basic prices down 0.4% in May 2021

    Québec, August 25, 2021. – In May 2021, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) declined by 0.4% after little change (0.0%) in April. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, mai 2021 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

    Goods production declined by 1.6%

    Output in the goods industry was down 1.6% in May, after decreasing by 0.6% in April. The decline in May was mainly due to the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (-13.0%) and manufacturing (-1.5%) sectors.

    The decrease in the manufacturing sector came primarily from machinery manufacturing (-11.0%), chemical manufacturing (-6.1%) and food manufacturing (-2.3%).

    Service output rose 0.1%

    In May, service-producing industries were up 0.1%, recording a fourth consecutive monthly increase. Health care and social assistance (+1.4%), public administration (+1.1%) and professional, scientific and technical services (+1.1%) were among the sectors that contributed the most to the growth in May. On the other hand, wholesale trade (-2.3%) and retail trade (-2.1%) posted significant declines.

    Cumulative total for the first five months of 2021: Québec’s real GDP up 9.9%

    For the first five months of 2021, Québec’s real GDP was 9.9% higher than in the same months in 2020. This strong growth must be interpreted in the context of the historic declines of March and April 2020.

    Canada’s real GDP at basic prices down 0.3% in May 2021

    According to data published by Statistics Canada on July 30, 2021, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices was down 0.3% in May 2021. Goods-producing industries declined by 0.4%, and service-producing industries, by 0.2%. For the first five months of 2021, Canada’s real GDP was 6.8% higher than in the same months of 2020.
