Online consumption of cultural content: news still as popular as ever, podcasts on the rise

Québec, April 30, 2025. – In 2022, following the news online remained a popular activity among Internet users within all age groups 15 years and over. The lowest proportion was found among Internet users aged 65 and over (74% vs. 82% overall). There was also a large gap between the proportion of Internet users with a university degree who followed the news online (92%) and those without a diploma who did (57%).

This was revealed in the bulletin Consommation de contenus culturels sur Internet en 2022 published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec. This publication reports on the consumption of cultural products by the 92% of Quebecers who used the Internet in 2022.

Podcasts increasingly popular

A third (33%) of Québec Internet users listened to podcasts online in 2022, up from 27% in 2020. The largest increase was observed among Internet users aged 35 to 44 (45% in 2022, up from 31% in 2020).

Little change in listening to music and playing video games online

In 2022, 79% of Internet users listened to music online, up from 77% in 2020, while 37% of them played video games online in 2022, down slightly from 38% in 2020.

Purchase of digital cultural products

In 2022, 27% of Internet users paid for music or video content downloads or for subscriptions to streaming services, spending an average of $221 during the year. The proportion of Internet users who purchased video games online was lower (13%), but these users spent a larger amount on average ($230).

The bulletin also provides results by gender, presence of children in the household, type of geographic region, and household income level.
