    State of Québec businesses in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Notice of release

    Québec, June 18, 2020. – The pandemic has brought its share of challenges and adjustments for Québec businesses. The Institut de la statistique du Québec is releasing today an analysis illustrating their situation in March 2020. Among other things, it looks at:

    • the extent of revenue decline experienced by businesses;
    • the impact of the drop in demand for their goods or services;
    • actions they have taken regarding personnel (such as layoffs and reduced hours or shifts);
    • the impact of social distancing measures on businesses;
    • the importance of working remotely;
    • some of the changes that businesses have made to accommodate government-mandated social distancing measures.

    Data for Québec come from the Canadian Survey on Business Conditions (CSBC), March 2020, conducted from April 3 to 24, 2020, by Statistics Canada in collaboration with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. It is important to note that, unlike Statistics Canada’s usual surveys based on a probability survey design, the CSBC is based on a participatory approach, i.e. it is not based on probability sampling. This makes the results unrepresentative of the entire business population.

    The Institut de la statistique du Québec produces, analyzes and disseminates official, objective and quality statistical information on various aspects of Québec society. It is responsible for conducting all statistical surveys of general interest. The relevance of its work makes it a strategic ally for decision makers and all those wishing to learn more about Québec.
